Prison Ministries

In the minds of some people, once a person has been to jail or prison, they are of no more use to society. This is not always true. Once, while participating in a prison ministry, I was informed by the prison's head chaplain that he was a former offender who realized the error of his ways, while incarcerated, and decided to follow in his father's footsteps, becoming a minister. Another important point that he made was that 90% of the inmates in prisons at any given time, will, at some point, be released back into society. That, alone, is a reason to show concern and to become involved in an effort to minister to those who are incarcerated, and let them know that they are  not being thrown away.

I read an article, some years ago, which stated that within the next 40 years, 2/3 of the American population will be incarcerated. That is a dismal projection, which, in my mind is an attitude of surrender, when the problem begs for a different type of solution. Although there are plenty of people who are in prison for the safety of  law-abiding citizens, there are  quite a few more who are there on minor offenses and even some who were wrongly convicted. Our duty ,as Christians, is not to judge but to try to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ to whomever will receive it. The following link will help to put you in touch with prison ministries in your area, regardless to where you are located, throughout the country.
